Important Information when Visiting Costa Rica

  • During rainy season we recommend renting a four-wheel drive car or SUV
  • We suggest driving during daylight as crossing livestock, overgrowth and unpaved roads canmake for difficult road conditions that international drivers may not be used to
  • We advise you to use a GPS with live updates and/or a phone with a navigation App such asWaze, since addresses in Costa Rica are not labeled with names or numbers, but are given bycardinal points (North, South, East, West)
  • Do not bring valuable objects to places where you feel uncomfortable or insecure
  • You must be careful when you are driving down hill to prevent overheating your breaks, Costa Rica is a hilly country which is why before making the first move down the hill, make sure you shiftinto second gear (compress). This way you’ll reduce speed before downshifting and avoiddamaging the transmission. Once this is done, follow these steps: Maintain a safe speed, keeping in mind the road conditions, once you reach this safe speed, apply the brakes, releasethe breaks, slowly pump the brakes until you reach the bottom, if you need to further reduce yourspeed, apply the brakes and downshift into first gear, shift back into drive once you reach thebottom and be on your way
  • The Liability Waiver (LW) purchase is required on all vehicles when renting a vehicle in Costa Rica
  • It's important to inform you that most auto insurance policies from outside Costa Rica do not provide coverage
  • Liability waiver purchased on third party travel websites and insurance through credit or debit cards are not accepted forms of coverage
  • We recommend you to check the weather forecast, since on several routes in the country there are landslides, which is why many streets or highways collapse or close due to fallen material or rivers that overflow and cause flooding on roads
  • It is very important to know the places you are going to visit, so it is always good to know the most favorable routes depending on the type of vehicle you rented, in this way you can reach your destination faster with some alternative route.
  • Major credit car will be request to process the payment.
  • A Valid driver license will be requiere to rent the car this documentation should be in roman alphabet
  • At the drop off time, the car must be returned with the same level of gas that you picked it up
  • Roads and signs, In urban areas, narrow roads and one-way streets are very common and can sometimes be recognized by an arrow that shows the direction of travel or by the sign ‘no hay paso’ (do not enter), when you spot the sign ‘ceda el paso’ on a one-lane bridge, it means you should yield to oncoming traffic. Sometimes there’ll be impromptu signs made of a stick in the ground with some sort of flag to indicate a hazard ahead, such as broken pavement, big potholes, or mountain debris. Always keep your eyes in road.
  • A Valid Driver's License - We will need a driver’s license from your home country to drive in Costa Rica with your passport with a Valid Immigration Stamp. This stamp will be given at the immigration desk when entering the country and is normally valid for 90 days.
  • Proof of Insurance - If Renter wishes to decline L.W. Liability Waiver or L.D.W. Loss Damage Waiver and rely on the their own personal insurance, the Renter must provide written proof from their insurance company, specifically stating coverage is effective in the country of Costa Rica for the duration of the rental agreement for third part liability. A minimum security deposit of $2,500 USD will be required, if customer does not accept L.W. then L.L.W Limited Loss Waiver will automatically be required.
  • Form of payment - A credit card (in the principal driver's name) will be required to put down a deposit for the rental. Deposits vary regarding the protection plan you choose and the vehicle, but can typically be around $150 - $1,000. This deposit is released when you return the car, if the car is in the same conditions it left the office, and it can take several days or up to a week to process.
  • In Costa Rica our currency is the colon, however all establishments receive dollars (the most common tourist currency). Therefore, we always recommend traveling with at least a few colones in your pocket. Most restaurants, supermarkets, and grocery stores also accept card payments of credit or debit. One dollar ($1) is equivalent to around 580 colones (this varies depending on the exchange rate). You can change dollars in banks or there are agencies at the international airport that are dedicated to this but with a very high exchange rate.
  • Costa Rica has 27 national parks throughout the national territory. We understand that they are quite a few, however in our vehicles you can travel to any of them, so we recommend the following:
    • Arenal Volcano National Park
    • Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve
    • Manuel Antonio National Park
    • Tenorio Volcano National Park
    • Poás Volcano National Park
    • Irazú Volcano National Park
    • La Fortuna Waterfall
